Letter Sound Pumpkin

For this activity you will need: a picture of a pumpkin, pens, worksheets or a whiteboard

In the middle of a picture of a pumpkin you can place the ‘letter sound of the day’. The teacher should read a list of ‘spooky’ words, asking the children to listen for this sound. For example, ‘fog’ and ‘goblin’ contain the letter sound /o/, but ‘ogre’ contains an /oa/ sound. (Children do not need to spell these words; it is simply practise for listening for sounds in words.)

Afterwards, children may be given worksheets with a pumpkin in the middle containing the letter sound. Using a list provided by the teacher (or, if desired, encouraging them to think of their own words) children should write words around the pumpkin that contain this sound.
