Neha-KhannaNeha graduated from Bombay University with a Masters in Computer Engineering. She taught the College Freshman year in the Engineering program for 5 years. With a Masters in Psychotherapy and Counselling, Neha is additionally TESOL and ECCE certified. From the minute she began using Jolly Phonics while working as a class assistant in Singapore, she experienced phenomenal success of the students learning English so efficiently. Neha continued to use Jolly Phonics upon moving to the Netherlands and now runs Pearl Kidzz Learning Centre.

Neha has been teaching Jolly Phonics for several years in both Singapore and the Netherlands. She witnessed the struggles children went through when learning to read and was sad to see children suffering from low self confidence and falling behind with basic communication skills. Neha sees how the Jolly Phonics programme has empowered children to enjoy reading, increase their vocabulary and learn in a fun way. The multi-sensory learning caters to every kind of child, with all children enjoying the programme and being motivated to learn. Jolly Phonics opens a child’s mind to a whole new world teaching. With reading, children build creativity and imagination.

Literacy is the basic right of every child and Neha wants to spread her knowledge of Jolly Phonics to train other educators and parents in The Netherlands, Singapore and India so they can also help their students achieve confidence and rediscover the joy of learning.

Betty O’Connor-Williams

BettyMumbai

Betty studied in both India and America achieving her BA at Bombay University and her ECE from Palomar Community College, San Marcos and certification for Train the Trainer by American TESOL; before she began to teach early years. She became the lead teacher working with 3 and 4 year olds in Virginia, USA until 2009 and returned to India.

On her return to India, Betty opened her own learning centre called Precious Lil’ Ones Preschool, located in Mumbai, whereby an after school programme called Phonicland was introduced; practicing the Jolly Phonics methodology. This programme greatly benefitted children 4-6 years of age, most of them non-native English speakers. These children learned to speak, read, write and spell in English by using Jolly Phonics. Because of this Betty then implemented Jolly Phonics as the curriculum in her preschool. To date, Betty has taught over 600 3 and 4 years olds with Jolly Phonics.

Betty has come across ladies from vernacular backgrounds, with limited English who are wanting to learn the Jolly Phonics method to teach their children at home, and to begin small classes at home to earn an income. This impressed Betty so much, she wanted to reach out to adults in India with the Jolly Phonics method, so that more children can benefit from such a successful programme.

“Jolly Phonics is a fun way to teach and a fun way to learn. When children can read, write and spell they have the power to move forward.”

Tahira Sheikh

Tahira-Sheikh

Islamabad

Tahira is originally from London, UK, but is now living in Islamabad, Pakistan. She has an MBA in Management from the UK but became more interested in teaching children literacy skills and decided to change her career path.

Tahira first came across Jolly Phonics in 2004 after doing some research into improving literacy skills; as many of the children were not reading and writing well enough at the school where she was the vice principal. After a year’s teaching of the programme, the children excelled in their literacy skills and since then she has never looked back. In 2010 she became a private tutor focusing entirely on Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar and has been using the programme extensively. She has conducted workshops for various private pre-schools and parents in Islamabad including few of the most prestigious schools in the city. She has assisted schools in implementing Jolly Phonics and has also supervised teachers using the programme.

Tahira realised that there was dire need to improve English literacy skills in the government-run schools in Pakistan. Having already experienced the immense benefit of the programme first hand at various private schools, she decided to take the programme to the government and in collaboration with Jolly Learning UK managed to secure an agreement in December 2016 with the KPK provincial government, Pakistan. She is in charge of this programme, where around 25,000 government primary school teachers from 23,000 schools will be trained in Jolly Phonics.

Alongside the programme, Tahira is now working on devising a post-implementation monitoring framework in order to ensure effective monitoring and sustainability of the programme in the provincial government of KPK, Pakistan.

Aneesha Balwani talks about training teachers in India

Aneesha Balwani“In June-July 2011, I conducted training workshops for teachers from Amity, a chain of schools and universities in India, and for mentors from the international development charity ARK (Absolute Return for Kids).

On 20th and 22nd June 2011, I held a Jolly Phonics training session with the ARK mentors. They were already aware of the programme, but needed training so they could then train teachers in rural areas of India. On the first day of training, we discussed ‘Why Phonics’, then introduced the Jolly Phonics resources, and explored the 5 basic skills.

On the second day, our focus was on the key issue of how to make learning fun for students. I made each trainee choose a letter sound and introduce it to the group for 20 minutes, in the way a teacher would to engage a class! We also discussed how Jolly Phonics facilitates the process of independent writing.

I conducted a workshop for the Amity teachers on 1st July 2011 at Amiown Pre-Primary school. They really enjoyed the training session – all of them actively participated in the workshop, sang the Jolly Songs and did all the letter sound actions with me!

For me, it was a great opportunity to be invited by the director of Amity Schools and ARK to train their teachers.”

Sarasa Ashok talks about her Jolly Phonics training

Sarasa Ashok“I recently gave three training sessions to teachers about how to use Jolly Phonics in their schools.

Firstly, every year I am called in to hold a training sessions in Chennai at the Balar Mandir reserach foundation, with about 50 teachers from various schools, on ‘Early childhood development’, ‘How to be an inspiring teacher’ and ‘How to make a better student’. Since becoming a Jolly Phonics Trainer, I have learnt a lot more strategies about how to teach English, which has enabled me to share new methods of teaching English with these teachers, and helped me deliver more successful and effective sessions.

I recently traveled to Nagercoil, South Tamilnadu, India, to implement Jolly Phonics in the curriculum there, and held a two-day training session there which 70 teachers attended. Everyone was very enthusiastic, had so much fun doing all the actions, and participated in practical activities, which was awesome!

The training course began with the questions that I am usually asked: ‘Why phonics?’, ‘What’s unique about Jolly Phonics?’, ‘What are the basic skills taught?’, as Jolly Phonics is a very different method of teaching to what teachers in that are used to. At the end of the training they were spellbound after looking at videos of children reading fluently and writing independently after using Jolly Phonics, which I felt really made the training successful. After this training session, the local school authorities were happy to introduce Jolly Phonics into their curriculum.

I held a one-day Jolly Phonics training session for teachers from 2 schools at Chidambaram in which the children come from low-income areas. Once again, it was an exciting day for the teachers, but I also found it quite challenging to get them to change over to a new programme from their conventional method of teaching English.”

S. V. Gomathi talks about her experiences with Jolly Phonics

S V Gomathi“I underwent Jolly Phonics training in 2004, and initially researched the use of the programme with ESL children in the slums of Hyderabad, India. I found the results amazing, as the programme had a great impact on the English language of the children as well as the teachers who were teaching Jolly Phonics.

I worked with Education Services companies and NGOs like the Centre for British Teachers, The Educare Trust, Rumi Education Private Limited & Absolute Return for Kids (ARK). I helped these organizations by planning and executing the implementation of Jolly Phonics in schools, and by training their representatives in Jolly Phonics, in order for them to them provide training in the schools they were serving. I also travelled around India providing training to the teachers of high-end to low-budget schools. I worked with more than 100 schools, including IB schools, and trained more than 1,000 teachers.

At ARK I developed a team of Mentors in 2010 by training them in Jolly Phonics and facilitating team building. The team was also trained in how to help teachers make Jolly Phonics more effective and result oriented within the classroom.

At present, many chains of schools have approached me for Jolly Phonics training and intend to be full trained by next academic year.

As a trainer I love Jolly Phonics, and I am now experimenting with it with my daughter who is 1 year old.”
