  • Pedro Izuzquiza talks Music and Phonics

Jolly Music Trainer Pedro Izuzquiza recently had an article published on music and phonics in an online music magazine Doce Notas.

Pedro talks about how music is important, but is not always a priority in the curriculum, some people may even say it is a ‘waste of time’! So Pedro discusses how he found himself in the position of having to teach music in English. Although he is a specialist music teacher, Pedro found he was not, at the time, comfortable teaching the subject in English, however very quickly grew to love it! Jolly Music has helped Pedro build a suitable repertoire for young ESL-learners with the use of simple, easy songs. Pedro goes on to give a lesson plan and mentions some of the music/english concepts that are covered.

  • Bringing Jolly Phonics to the Serranías De Ronda

Yvonne Dalorto, Jolly Learning certified trainer in Spain, has started working on the project aimed at improving the level of English in the Serranias De Ronda, Spain. The wonderful literacy project, endorsed and supported by Chris Jolly, will provide children in small villages’ schools with materials for learning to read and write in English.

English language is becoming of a more importance in Spain, where students are required to qualify at the B1 (Beginners 1) level English exam in order to continue their studies in higher education institutions. Children in Ronda’s secondary schools generally have lower levels of English due to the lack of consistent teaching and the lack of teaching materials. Many schools in villages are spaced out and the teachers are rotating their classes at the different village schools, providing several hours of English teaching weekly.

Twenty five teachers along with Yvonne Dalorto braved the freezing cold weather and, with the support of the local government the ‘Junta de Andalucia’, were able to deliver the training session at C.E.P (the Centre for Teacher Development) in Ronda. Yvonne Dalorto also had an opportunity to meet teachers in the region, who felt they were under equipped to deliver English classes and were frustrated with the time scale as well as the planning of English classes.

It seemed logical that using Jolly Phonics would address many problems that both teachers and students are currently facing. Chris Jolly was enthusiastic about supporting this literacy project in Ronda. He willingly donated 6 boxes of materials for schools, which were nominated by the local government. Once the teaching with the donated materials starts, children’s progress will be monitored. Participating teachers will also be encouraged to exchange their feedback, teaching ideas and discuss any issues that might occur in forum.
